PNW Inspired Food Photography Session

A love for food

Food is something that unites us all. It allows us to have intimate moments with the special people in our lives and can serve as a catalyst to make new connections. It can transcend language and cultural barriers better than anything else in the world. It is one of the great uniters of the human experience.

Food and product photography is something that I have always loved but don’t get to photograph all that often. Sometimes I have to remind myself of what my high school photography teacher always said… “shoot everything in life, always have your camera on you”. So that is what I did on this day. I was planning on going over to my parents to have lunch with them on a Saturday afternoon. Just me and them, something that is unusual as my husband and sister are almost always there for family lunches and dinners. But this day was different. I had just gotten a new body for my camera that I wanted to play with and confidently my parents had just gone out to the Olympic Peninsula and gotten some oysters that they were going to grill up for lunch (I requested them grilled as I really don’t like raw oysters… too slimy). So just like when I was a kid I sat that the bar and watched my parents make lunch together and captured the experience. It was simple and perfect. Sometimes it’s not about a big stagged shoot but just shooting life. It’s an important reminder and something I try to bring to all of my shoots now. Just focus on capturing life and telling the subject’s story and the rest will fall into place.
